Wahoo's Computer & Internet Tips Newsletter - March 2005

In The News This Month...
In case you haven't noticed or are a new subscriber, I have changed the name of this newsletter from MS Tips to Computer and Internet Tips. The reason being is as of this past week, the only Microsoft software I use is Windows XP. I switched over to Mozilla's Firefox browser in November of last year and just love it! It blocks popups as they happen and then tells you it blocked a popup from that site and you can click in the window to allow popups from that website. Very good. And lately with all the worms, Trojans, etc. that are out there, Firefox is less vulnerable than Internet Explorer. Give it a try!

In addition to Firefox, I also switched to OpenOffice Productivity Suite. It's a great equivalent to MS Office but it's totally FREE! You can create dynamic documents, analyse data, design eye-catching presentations, produce dramatic illustrations, and open up your databases. You can publish your work in Portable Document Format (.pdf), and release your graphics in Flash (.swf) format - without needing any additional software. You must give these software packages a try. Watch out MS!

This month's feature article is about internet auctions, mainly eBay, and is by Victoria Wadelly.

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Internet Auctions - The New Face of E-commerce

Almost everyone has sold something on the internet through some sort of acution site. You commonly hear "try to sell it on eBay" when you have an item to get rid of and don't know what to do with it. The face of commerce and small businesses are changing because of sites like eBay. Sites like eBay are visited by more than 30 million people every single day. There are new auction sites such as Overstock, Yahoo! Auctions , and Bidville that are gaining popularity.

These internet acution sites allow sellers to put up items for sale or auction for a small listing fee and a percentage of the selling price. Millions of people can be found shopping these sites looking for bargains and hard to find items.

These online auctions provide a new business opportunity for those of us out there who want to try e-commerce. There has never been a better time for individuals to start their own business without having a lot of upfront cash. An online store through eBay can be created in a very short amount of time. This allows that person to have their own URL address for under $20.00 a month. The biggest obstacle in getting started is finding quality products to sell.

It's no easy task to find things to sell. Sourcing products require consistent effort. Some successful sellers find their products in their own attics, yard sales, clearance racks at large department stores, wholesale suppliers, liquidators, drop shippers and thrift shops. Drop shippers are a popular option among new sellers. This is because the seller does not have to keep inventory and does not have to order products until they're sold.

The main reason that eBay as well as other auction web sites provide the optimum opportunity for sellers to start an online business is because they already have traffic. One of the most difficult parts of starting an online business is getting people to find your site. eBay has already solved this dilemma. The people are there and all you have to do is show up with something to sell.

If you get started with an online auction business, know that you're going to be on level ground with people around the world and it will be easier for you to compete in this market. The same tools and resources are available to everyone. Now is your chance to get your own business started through an online acution site. Start looking around your own house for your first item to sell.

Victoria Wadelly is the webmaster and owner of FARGO Auctions Ltd. which is an excellent place to find auction links, resources and articles.
