Wahoo's Microsoft Tips Newsletter -
August 2003

In The News This Month...
Did you hear about the forest fires here in BC? The big one in Barriere 4 hours away caused us to lose power here in McBride. The fire burnt over 35 km of line and BC Hydro estimates we will have regular power again in 4 - 6 weeks. Our mayor and council declared a state of emergency and within 3 days McBride (pop. 750) was hooked up to a 2 MW generator and within 4 days the rest of Robson Valley was hooked up to an Independent Power Producer (IPP). So now everybody is somewhat back to normal but as I was writing this newsletter for the first time (this is the second attempt), the power went out for 90 minutes. The power has gone out 3 times now in the last 10 days.

It's amazing what you will do when the power is out for 3 days. We taught our 6 year old how to play Crazy Eights and you know, he beat us! We read books and got caught up on things that needed fixing for some time. We even showered outside using our solar shower! That was interesting! But I must say the mayor and council did a superb job in getting power to us so quickly. They even brought in 2 reefer trucks to hold people's frozen food and bottled drinking water. Way to go guys on a job well done!

We haven't had any paintball games for the last month because it's been too hot to play and people are still away. But the next game will be Smith & Wahoo vs. Moyer. Should be a good game!

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Internet Explorer Tip: EZ Reading

Have you ever been to a web page that had dark text on a dark background? It happens. Sometimes a background doesn't load right and sometimes it's just bad design, plain and simple. Either way, it's hard to read.

Well, next time that happens to you, hit Ctrl + A.

All the text on the website will be selected (highlighted). The selection colour is normally blue with white text. Much easier to read than, say, dark red on a black background.

MS Office Tip: Custom Toolbar Buttons

Do you find yourself continually going to a certain menu and constantly using the same menu item again and again? Have you ever wished that they had just put a button on a toolbar that would make your life so much easier?

It's possible to customize your toolbars by adding specific buttons of your choice and it's all just a few clicks away.

To begin the process, you need to go to the View menu. Then return to the Toolbars sub-menu. At the very bottom of the list you should see Customize ... as a choice. A new smaller window should pop up, entitled Customzie. This window has 3 tabs across the top. You need to go to the Commands tab.

On the Commands page, you will see a left and a right pane. In the left pane is a list of menus along with a few extra topics. In the right pane will be a list of all available buttons for each topic. The list on the right changes as you select the different topics from the left.

Once you find a button that you would like to add to one of your existing toolbars, simply click and drag it to the desired toolbar. As you are dragging over a toolbar, you will notice a vertical black line moving just below the little box you're dragging. This line is the place the button will be located, so slide the mouse around until you find your desired location, then let go of the mouse button.

Did you let go of the button in the wrong place? Or did you decide after the fact that it's in the wrong location? No problem. Re-arranging the buttons, including those on the standard toolbars, can be done as long as you have the Customize window open.

If you want to remove a button from a toolbar, simply grab it and drag it off the toolbars completely (like into your document) while the Customize window is open.
